One of the most common mistakes homeowners make when booking exterior cleaning is assuming all pressure cleaning is the same. It isn't — and using the wrong technique on the wrong surface can cause thousands of dollars in damage.

High-Pressure Washing

High-pressure washing delivers water at 1,500–4,000+ PSI. The force of water does the cleaning work — blasting hardened dirt, oil stains and debris from tough surfaces like concrete and brick.

Soft Washing

Soft washing uses 60–500 PSI combined with biodegradable cleaning solutions. The chemistry does the work — not the force. This kills mould, algae and bacteria at the root and rinses them gently away.

Critical warning: High-pressure water on render, cladding or painted weatherboards causes cracking, chips the surface, and forces moisture behind boards causing structural rot. Any operator who quotes to "pressure wash" your render without mentioning soft washing should be avoided.

Which Method for Which Surface?

SurfaceMethodWhy
Concrete drivewayHigh PressureDurable — needs force for oil and embedded grime

Why Soft Washing Lasts Longer

When mould and algae are removed by pressure alone, root systems remain embedded in the surface and regrowth begins within weeks. Soft washing's biocidal solutions kill the entire organism. Many products include an inhibitor that prevents regrowth for 6–12 months — significantly better value in the long run.
